10 of the world's coolest airport hotels

Check into one of the following properties for what might just be the most stylish stopover of your life.

Airport hotels have come a long way over the past 10 years – the best ones are packed with amenities which have more in common with five-star hotels, all within a short walk of the airport terminal. Here we select the best places to flop before you fly...

1. citizenM Charles de Gaulle, Paris, France

Citizen M one of the world's best airport hotels

What’s the buzz? This beautiful crash pad has more in common with a museum than a hotel. The sleek, minimalist rooms feel incredibly luxurious, and the hotel has a library packed with design books curated by hip Amsterdam bookshop Mendo.

The aim was to create a home-from-home, and that's exactly what Citizen M has done. The cosiest spot is the Living Room, with its fireplace, huge squashy sofas and beautiful art collection.

Average cost: from £75 per night.

2. Naumi Hotel Auckland Airport, Auckland, New Zealand

Fashion brand Missoni was one of the influences on the design of Naumi Hotel Auckland Airport

What’s the buzz? This colourful, quirky property is about as far removed from your typical airport hotel as it's possible to get – although it's actually just a couple of kilometres from Auckland Airport. To start with, their are birds (real ones) in reception. And then there are the rooms, which have various eclectic themes. Dottie, for example, was inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, while Ziggy's inspiration was the fashion brand Missoni - hence the explosion of zig-zags.

Extras include complimentary mini-bars and rentable GPS trackers for runners keen to boost their post-flight recovery with jogs along the nearby seafront.

Average cost: from £102 per night.

3. Jumbo Stay, Stockholm, Sweden

Jumbo Stay hotel, Stockholm, one of the world's best airport hotels

What’s the buzz? After a long-haul flight, a jumbo jet is probably the last thing you want to see, unless it's the one parked on the tarmac at Stockholm's Arlanda Airport – it's a five-star, fully functioning hotel. There are 33 rooms (our favourite is the Cockpit Suite, complete with enormous banks of buttons and switches), and one of the cabins is now a conference room.

We also love the quirky touches - staff wear a cabin crew-inspired uniform and amenity kits include luggage straps emblazoned with Jumbo Stay's logo.

Average cost: from £47 per night.

4. Pullman Guangzhou Baiyun Airport hotel, Guangzhou, China

Pullman Guangzhou BaiyunAirport Hotel

What’s the buzz? It takes just 15 seconds to walk from Gate 12 of Guangzhou's Baiyun Airport to the Pullman Guangzhou Baiyun Airport hotel. And if those pesky time differences are keeping you awake, relax with a dip in the outdoor pool, perfect your downward dog on your complimentary yoga mat or practise your balls skills on the hotel's putting green and tennis court.

We also love the fact that guests are encouraged to snaffle the fantastic CO Bigelow bathroom amenity kits – the products are fragranced with lavender and mint, and designed to help you recover once you reach your final destination.

Average cost: from £135 per night.

5. Fairmont Vancouver Airport, Vancouver, Canada

Fairmont Vancouver Airport, Canada, is an airport hotel with a spa

What’s the buzz? Getting to the Fairmont Vancouver Airport couldn't be easier – you can access it straight from the departures terminal. Spend the night here and you'll sleep like a baby, thanks to sound-proofed rooms and designated Quiet Zone floors. Recovering from long flights is also a breeze as you can blow away the cobwebs with rides on the hotel's hi-tech BMW bikes or opt for a jet-lag busting massage at the spa.

The quirkiest offering? The fish valet service, designed for guests returning from the fishing lodges which dot Canada's western coast. Hand your catch over to the fish valet and he'll store it in the dedicated fish freezer.

Average cost: from £141 per night.

6. Regal Airport Hotel, Hong Kong

Regal Airport Hong Kong, has wonderful Executive Club Rooms

What’s the buzz? Say hello to the only hotel connected directly to Hong Kong International Airport. The stylish, soundproofed rooms all overlook the runways and airport, minimising the risk of missed flights. Although you'd be forgiven for wanting to extend your stay – there's a huge spa with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, and six restaurants, including the seriously chic Rouge, where you can feast on local delicacies such as golden prawns with egg yolk and oysters fried in port wine.

If you're feeling flush, splash out on one of the Executive Club rooms where you'll get access to a gorgeous lounge and an army of staff to cater to your every whim.

Average cost: from £232 per night.

7. TWA hotel, New York, US

the TWA hotel at JFK will open in Spring 2019

What’s the buzz? Full disclosure: this next hotel only opens in Spring 2019, but we simply couldn't leave it out. JFK's TWA hotel, inspired by the golden age of aviation, is actually an entire complex with a passenger plane parked outside that will serve as a bar (there will be eight bars in total) and the hotel will have its own observation deck and aviation museum.

The attention to detail is fantastic and rooms will have vintage rotary telephones and information will be displayed on the original split-flap message boards once used to display flight times.

Average cost: Prices to be confirmed.

8. Hilton Munich Airport, Munich, Germany

Hilton Munich Airport hotel

What’s the buzz? Merely stepping into the beautiful lobby of the Hilton Munich Airport will blow away those jetlag-induced cobwebs – the reception area is in a towering, light-filled glass atrium. If that doesn't do the job, we recommend a dip in the 17-metre pool at the hotel's Fit & Fly Spa, where the decor has been inspired by that of an alpine chalet.

When it's time to eat, head to Charles Lindbergh, the hotel's fine dining option. The restaurant also has weekly themed buffets, whether it's dishes inspired by the Emperor Franz Joseph or by America's legendary Route 66.

Average cost: from £139 per night.

9. Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, Singapore

Crowne Plaza, Sinagpore is a great place if you love planes with views over the runway

What’s the buzz? Plane spotters have been making a beeline for this Singaporean property for years as it's regarded as the hotel with the best airport views with the rooms on the top three floors (known as Premier Runway View Rooms) looking out onto the runways.

But despite the floor-to-ceiling windows, you're guaranteed a good night's sleep, thanks to soundproofed glass and sound-absorbing, rubber-lined doorframes. If you're still struggling to doze off, consider a visit to the palm tree-dotted rooftop, with its heated pool, encyclopaedia-like cocktail menu and fantastic views of Changi's iconic control tower.

Average cost: from £141 per night.

10. Moxy Milan Malpensa Airport, Milan, Italy

Moxy in Milan is bijou but with great service

What’s the buzz? Checking into an airport hotel can be a rather depressing business, although not at this Italian airport hotel, where you'll be offered a welcome cocktail to sip as you wait for your room key.

In the bedrooms, storage space has been ditched in favour of super-sized televisions (you'll find your table and chair hanging from the wall, should you need them) and a surprisingly large wet room-style shower.

Average cost: from £116 per night.
