Get more bang for your buck in the Midlands this August bank holiday

Nottingham has been revealed as the best-value UK city break for this year's August bank holiday, according to TripAdvisor’s annual cost comparison study.

The study looked at typical costs for a four-day break in the 20 most popular UK cities, including a 4-star hotel for three nights, a visit to four attractions, lunch and dinner every day plus a taxi to and from the latter.

TripAdvisor estimates that three-night trip for two in Midlands city Nottingham will cost just under £700 on average. With Nottingham Castle, the 16th-century country house Wollaton Hall and the man-made City of Caves among Nottingham's top sights, plus the highly-rated Tom Brown's Brasserie nearby, this Midlands' city makes for a sophisticated getaway.

Conversely, Oxford was the most expensive weekend break in the study. According to TripAdvisor, an average weekend in the famous university city comes with a hefty price tag of £1,156 for two people, which is even more than you’d likely spend in London.

Out of the cities examined in the study, Sheffield offers the best value for hotels, while eating out well in Blackpool will supposedly set you back just under £70 per day, making it the cheapest in the UK for food. Oxford, despite being the most expensive overall, is pipped as the top destination for attractions, as entry to many of its museums and galleries comes at no cost at all.
