This is the city with the world’s most expensive taxis

If you thought your last Uber ride was expensive, think again.

We all know the feeling: after a long day of sight-seeing all you want to do is get in a cab and retreat to your hotel room. Well, make sure you don’t do that in Zurich, Switzerland unless money is no object: just a three kilometre cab ride will set you back £20. In comparison, the same amount of money in Cairo could fund six journeys between the airport and the city centre, which are 30km apart. 

A recent study by used car dealership Carspring has revealed that the Swiss banking and finance centre has the world’s most expensive taxis, costing nearly £4 per kilometre with an initial fee of £6.30 for just getting into the car. Don’t ask the driver to wait for you, either, as an hour waiting time could lighten your wallet by £63.

Five cities in the UK were included in the study and London, while not quite as expensive as Zurich, came sixth with an average cost of £2.20 per kilometre. The cheapest city in the UK is Manchester, where a three kilometre journey costs just £5.50, with Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh close behind.

Carspring also compared taxi fares between the airport and city centre; in Mumbai, Bucharest and Mexico City, the journey won’t cost you more than a tenner, but in Tokyo, the fare from Narita International to the city centre comes to a staggering £144.23. We'll take the train, thanks.
