However, by 1905 the gold was running out and the population had shrunk to 150. Garnet had a brief revival in the 1930s, but by the 1940s it was a ghost town.

Looters stripped the town of everything they could, although many of the buildings, including the JK Wells Hotel, remained intact. Today visitors can explore these eerily ransacked and battered buildings, which also include miners’ cabins, a saloon, and a store.
