From beaches and bays, to headlands and coves, coastal scenery can be some of the most arresting around the world. Having travelled across the globe for archaeological digs, and explored coastlines on many continents, presenter of BBC Coast, Alice Roberts, has the bottom line on the world's best stretches where land meets sea. These are some of her favourites.

“An absolutely stunning bit of the South African coast," says Alice, Mossel Bay can be reached by driving up from Cape Town along the Garden Route in South Africa’s Western Cape Province.

The Blue Flag acclaimed Santos Beach features ocean views perfect for seasonal whale and dolphin watching.

“The Sounds of Mull and Iona are absolutely beautiful," says Alice, who also described visiting nearby Arran as a "revelation". Just off the west coast of Scotland, Mull and Iona feature pristine beaches, unspoiled natural landscapes, and an abundance of wildlife.

Kerala, in India, has almost 375 miles of coastline, and there’s a lot to love about it according to Alice. "There are these wonderful wetland environments inland, and the coast is absolutely stunning. There is something rather wonderful about being able to walk into the warm sea of the Indian ocean." Take a houseboat through the backwaters and visit tea plantations inland to experience the landscape in all its glory.

From the palm-lined beaches to the serene backwaters, the tranquillity of the area is possibly unparalleled within India.

It's not all about the foreign climes, for Alice, though. "One of my favourite coasts to visit was Northumberland. I love the stretch by Howick and Alnwick."

With more than 30 miles of beaches, hidden coves and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s no wonder she deemed the Northumberland coast an “unexpected joy”.

The county of Northumberland has more castles than any other in England, many of which stand guard on the dramatic North Sea coast, including Bamburgh, Warkworth and Dunstanburgh.

Coastlines also don't have to be about beaches. For Alice, Greenland has an unusual beauty about it: “Greenland is one of those very beautiful and quite bleak places, but it’s absolutely stunning."

Mountains, glaciers and fjords are what make Greenland so enticing, and the island of Uummannaq (pictured), a mountain with a small town at the base, incorporates all three.

June is springtime in Greenland, when glaciers start to move and calve into icebergs. “I don’t think many people think of Greenland as a tourist destination, but it’s an absolutely stunning place to visit. There’s good hiking, you can go dog-sledding, on helicopter trips, and you can get out on boats to explore the fjords.”

“I have a real soft spot for South Wales”, explains Alice, “ I love the Gower. You have this fantastic rocky cliff and then you turn a corner and you have the beautiful Llangennith beach”.

Rhossili Bay Beach (pictured) in the Gower Peninsula was designated as the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK, and attracts thousands of people to its sands every year.

From adrenaline-inducing climbing spots across the southwest tip of Pembrokeshire, to seaside award-wining Broad Haven South beach, this Welsh coastal county has a lot to offer.

With extensive knowledge of the southwest coast of England down to Lands’ End, Alice describes the north Cornwall coast as "rocky and rugged".

“The coast path is wonderful, I love walking down there. You want to carry on because you want to see what’s beyond the next headland”.
