You could be forgiven for thinking that Disneyland and Universal Studios are the best reasons to visit Florida – after all, they're the places most people seem to talk about. However, for the willing explorer, Florida has so much more to offer. And for fans of outer space, you might even say there’s a whole other world out there.

Don't miss the Shuttle Launch Experience located inside Space Shuttle Atlantis, where participants can experience what it actually feels like to fly onboard a space shuttle.

Ever wondered what you'd ask a real-life astronaut given half the chance to speak to one? Well, here you can. For a fee of £37 ($50) for adults, and £26 ($35) for children, you can sit down with the Astronaut of the Day, including NASA astronaut Dan Tani, who will answer your most pressing space-themed questions and share their incredible experiences with you. Entry includes snacks and drinks too.

After finishing up at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, take a shuttle bus over to the Apollo/Saturn V Center. The centre pays homage to the people and machines that made the Apollo Moon Landings possible and gives you a glimpse into the hype and excitement of the time. One of the standout attractions is the gigantic Saturn V, the largest rocket ever flown. You won’t believe how small you feel in comparison to it.

If you're feeling peckish after all that space talk, grab a bite at the Moon Rock Café, a classic American fast-food style eatery that kids (of all ages) will love.

The Gantry at LC-39 is a new immersive interactive experience that you simply can't miss while you're visiting the Kennedy Space Center. It's located at the historic launch complex, where the Apollo and Shuttle missions once lifted off, and offers a range of immersive activities for families and explorers alike.

While there, you might get the chance to design and virtually launch your own rocket.

In keeping with the space theme, why not check into the Morlando Space Mansion in Reunion, Kissimmee? This incredible 16,000 square foot (1,486sqm) holiday home can be found in the serene conservation area of Reunion Resort & Golf Club, and sleeps 46 people.

Once you've worked up an appetite raiding the aisles, head to Pinstripes for some delicious Italian-American cuisine. Order the Ultimate Grilled Cheese, which combines mozzarella, cheddar, provolone, tomato and truffled rocket on sourdough. Save room for a classic New York-style cheesecake.

FootGolf is a combination of football and golf, where giant golf balls are kicked across a golf course with the aim of getting them into an extra-large golf hole. Sound a bit crazy? Well, it is, but in the most fabulous way. 

This is something that the whole family can partake in, regardless of skill (though if you play football, you’re at an advantage). Even if you're not a lover of football or golf, it's worth getting involved for the golf buggies alone – racing around the course on one of these bad boys is an experience in itself. You can enjoy Reunion® Resort FootGolf for £22 ($30) per person.

After playing all that FootGolf, treat yourself to a little bit of luxury at the elegant rooftop restaurant Eleven. The venue offers a variety of small plates and craft cocktails alongside breathtaking panoramic views of Orlando.

Choose the feta and goats' cheese dip, smashed guacamole and salsa, accompanied by house chips and crackers, all washed down with a Cloud Nine (Empress gin, lime, raspberry syrup and floral foam).

If you're craving something more tranquil, head to Celebration, a beautiful suburb in Orlando, originally developed by The Walt Disney Company. It has plenty of places to explore, so renting a bike with Celebration Bike Rental will put you on the right path.

As well as seeing the stunning houses that adorn the streets of Celebration, you might spot wildlife including alligators, deer and turtles in and around the Lake Rianhard area. You might even pass a rather famous street featured in US drama series Desperate Housewives. Don't forget to stop by Celebration Brewing Company for a well-deserved cold beer.
