In 2023, Spain announced funding for research into a high-speed rail link to Morocco. The line will be the first to connect Europe and Africa, bridging nine miles (14km) between the two continents. Current plans suggest it would run beneath the strait of Gibraltar, much like the Channel Tunnel links England and France.

The line would likely link Madrid in Spain to Casablanca in Morocco. These days, high speed trains such as this one (pictured) crossing a viaduct in Spain, reach speeds of between 124 and 221 miles per hour (200-355km/h) – a far cry from the early days of train travel.
