This vast patchwork of green squares makes up the rural plains of Somerset. A natural marvel in their own right, they look even more spectacular when lit from above by the double rainbows pictured here. The 170,000 acres of wetlands and rivers can be prone to flooding, which farmers and engineers from the Roman era, Middle Ages and 17th century all tried to tame.
