Originally founded by the Spanish in 1494, the city is said to have been laden with treasure and gold accumulated at sea. A pocket watch uncovered from the seabed in the 1960s confirmed the date and time of the earthquake as 11:43am on June 7 but many of the city’s mysteries are still shrouded by the sandy seabed.
