"O say can you see..." One of the world's most instantly recognizable anthems was inspired by this very spot. Its author, Francis Scott Key, wanted to capture the dramatic victory during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814 when American forces repelled and defeated British troops in the Independence War. The fort played a pivotal role and today it can be visited on a self-guided tour.
