Near the pyramids of Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo, the sprawling 120-acre Grand Egyptian Museum has been a long time coming. Originally scheduled to open in 2012, this home to the world's largest collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts has been delayed by rising costs, political turmoil and the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, £768 million ($1bn) has been spent to make it a reality.

The museum partially opened in October 2024, with its official opening date slated for summer 2025. Within its beautiful pyramid-themed exterior, you'll find over 100,000 objects – including treasures from the tomb of King Tutankhamun.
