Every late October and early November, the largest Day of the Dead celebrations in the US are held in San Antonio. The whole city, it seems, participates in community altar-making workshops watching vibrant parades, and enjoying authentic pan de Muerto.

During this time you’ll find colorful altars honoring the dearly departed across the city, but the real highlight is the Day of the Dead River Parade (pictured). Thousands descend on the city’s famous River Walk to watch a flotilla of illuminated barges decked out with vibrant altars, Catrinas, and costumed performers celebrating the occasion.
