Just thinking about this mercury-busting temperature is enough to bring on a heat rash. California holds the record for the hottest temperature in the US by a huge degree (or several degrees). It’s also the hottest temperature ever recorded anywhere. It’s a longstanding record, too, set in July 1913 at Greenland Ranch (now Furnace Creek) in Death Valley, an area of the Mojave Desert known for reliably sizzling roads, salt flats and sand dunes.
