Firm fans of rules and standardization, the Romans devised a city planning network known as the centuriation system. It divided an area into grids made up of straight roads and equal-sized parcels of land, as shown here in Pompeii. The result was a simple and orderly street pattern that was quick and easy to navigate. It was also highly adaptable, meaning new streets and blocks could be added as populations grew.
