The Waikīkī Natatorium War Memorial was dedicated in 1927 to honor the 10,000 citizens of Hawai’i who served in World War I. It features a saltwater swimming pool intended as a living memorial in which people could take part in the island’s long history of Indigenous swimming traditions.

Sadly, the building began to deteriorate after World War II and was declared unsafe in 1979. In 2001 the exterior façade, locker rooms, and other sections were repaired. However, restoration of the bleachers and saltwater pool was put on hold. Revised plans for its future have still not been finalized.
