So why not try Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail, a 1,200-mile trail zigzagging across the state instead? It’s still a bit of a work in progress, comprising some connecting trails and country roads, but it’s a lot shorter than the Pacific Crest Trail.

And so far only around 500 people have hiked it in its entirety, so if you’re up for an epic outdoor experience you’ll earn plenty of bragging rights once you complete it. A shorter (well, relatively) 600-mile “Ice Age” segment takes hikers through wooded hills and sparkling lakes formed by an ancient glacier.
