Today its rusting structures – and particularly the Ferris wheel that looms above the long-abandoned city – have become symbolic of the tragedy. Bumper cars, their once-bright paint flaking off, are filthy and filled with weeds; a carousel stands eerily in the middle of an otherwise empty field; and a water roller coaster has been all but swallowed by trees.
