Hip-hop music’s origins were reputedly in the Bronx, New York City, and the style evolved rapidly in the late 1970s. The Sugarhill Gang recorded Rapper’s Delight in one take in the summer of 1979. The 12-inch single was played on the radio and is credited as being the first rap song to be aired. It reached number 36 in the charts, becoming the first hip-hop single to record a position in the Top 40.
