Christmas Island (Kiritimati) is a world-class fishing and diving destination, while the Phoenix Islands Protected Area, a UNESCO-listed marine reserve, is a haven for snorkelers and bird watchers. Until 1994, Kiribati straddled the International Date Line, meaning a 23-hour time difference existed within the same country.
