Set on a sparkling bay and backed by grey stone mountains that rise sharply like walls, the fortified city of Kotor is as dramatic as it is romantic. Within its medieval walls, a maze of cobbled lanes leads to cathedrals and churches, Venetian palaces and ancient palaces, as well as lively cafés and restaurants overlooking handsome town squares.

Follow the steep path at the back of the city, known as the Ladder of Kotor, to St John’s Fortress. Built in the 16th century by the Venetians, it offers spectacular views across the city and up the stunning Bay of Kotor.
