Synonymous with the glitz and glamour of the legendary Real Madrid CF, the Spanish capital is also a rich tapestry of culture and history. Home to world-class museums like the Museo Reina Sofia, visitors come here in their millions every year to be bowled over by the beauty of the artistic masterpieces that call this place home.

One place that's pleasing on the eye here is Plaza Mayor (pictured). Found in the heart of the Hapsburg area, which is the oldest part of the city, it's a place to eat, drink and soak up the sights and sounds of street performers. The statue is of King Felipe III, who, alongside his father, made Madrid capital in the 16th and then 17th century.
