The USS Kittiwake also played a role in the recovery operations following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986, helping to retrieve debris from the shuttle in the Atlantic Ocean. After its decommissioning in 1994, the ship was repurposed as an artificial reef and was deliberately sunk in 2011.

Today, the wreck rests in clear, shallow waters, providing an accessible and fascinating dive site that attracts divers from around the world.
