Built between 1767 and 1769, the awe-inspiring Teatro Bibiena was designed by Antonio Galli Bibiena from Parma on commission from the rector of the Accademia dei Timidi, Count Carlo Ottavio di Colloredo. Although it was primarily intended to host scientific meetings it also held performances and concerts.

The intriguing mix of wood and plaster in the main hall creates astonishing acoustics. These were tested soon after the building opened in January 1770 by the young Mozart. He had arrived in Mantua, aged only 14, for his first Italian tour and gave a memorable concert there together with his father Leopold.
