The construction of a dirt road to Uluru in 1948 sparked a boom in the number of visitors. In 1950, the Ayers Rock National Park was formed. By 1958, permanent accommodation was built as well as an airstrip to cater for fly-in and fly-out visitors. In 1985 the traditional owners of the land, the Anangu, reclaimed ownership of the national park.

Together with Parks Australia they have worked towards creating better visitor experiences, improving opportunities for Anangu and protecting the park’s natural and cultural values, including Longitude 131 (pictured), a luxury camp just outside the park borders. The ban on climbing Uluru came into effect in 2019.
