Ephesus was once one of the wealthiest and most important cities in the Greco-Roman world. Set near the modern town of Selcuk in western Turkey, the ruins of this absorbing site include an elaborate library (pictured), theater, and Curetes Street, which is lined with triumphal arches and crumbling statues. The city was famed in the ancient world for its enormous Temple of Artemis, which was one of the seven wonders of the world. Now only the foundations remain.
