Known as The Door To Hell, this fiery basin of Derweze, Turkmenistan, has been flaming for more than 50 years. The 230-foot-wide (70m) crater was created when a Soviet drilling rig collapsed in 1971, releasing huge quantities of methane gas. It has been burning ever since.

However, in June 2025, it was revealed that the crater might finally be running out of gas, as the once-roaring fire has been significantly reduced to faint flames and could even close up in the future.
