Imagine paying millions of dollars for a luxurious apartment in a brand-new skyscraper, only for the building to start sinking into the ground. Well, that's exactly what the residents of San Francisco's Millennium Tower have faced. The glitzy, 58-story, 646-foot (197m) condominium building was designed by Gary Handel of Handel Architects and opened its doors in 2009.

VIPs including elite athletes and tech magnets began snapping up the tower's 400 pricey apartments. But less than 10 years after the $750 million building was finished, it began to sink into the “soft soil and landfill of San Francisco’s dense financial district,” according to UK newspaper The Guardian.
