The Troubles, a 30-year period of sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland that began in the late 1960s, saw Catholic nationalists (pro-Irish independence) and Protestant unionists (pro-UK) come to blows. It was notorious for its extreme violence. One of its darkest days came on Sunday, 30 January 1972.

While attending a civil rights rally in the Bogside, a mainly Catholic area of Derry/Londonderry, 13 people were killed and 14 more wounded when British paratroopers opened fire. It was concluded in 2010 that victims had posed no threat and were unjustifiably shot.
