This charming riverside town in northeast Missouri was the boyhood home of Mark Twain. And at times, strolling down North Main Street in the town’s historic center, it feels as though you have stepped back into his most famous novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

North Main Street is a quirky collection of historic buildings and modern shops, with Twain-themed murals and quotes from his book hanging from street lights. Twain’s biggest inspiration, the Mississippi River, is located a block east. The home he grew up in just around the corner on Hill Street.
