The first advertisements in America appeared in newspapers in the early 1800s and boomed during the Civil War years. As we can see from the walls of this Wild West saloon in 1890, this typically American industry followed the nation’s 'manifest destiny' and headed west too.

Look past the two townspeople and the two cowboys and you spot ads extolling the virtues of Milwaukee Brewing, Schlitz, Blatz, and Budweiser. In the mirror you can also make out the bottom of a poster about Custer's Last Stand.
