Archaeologists have come across a gruesome discovery in a cave in Israel that suggests it was used as a "portal to the underworld". Three human skulls, more than 120 oil lamps and artefacts including bowls and axes were found in Te'omim Cave in the Jerusalem Hills.

Said to date back to the late Roman era (2nd-4th century AD), these artefacts suggest use by a possible religious cult, whose members would communicate with the dead to help predict the future – a practice known as necromancy (or death magic). A study in the Harvard Theological Review states:

"We assume the craniums were placed together with the oil lamps as part of a ritual of magic, conducted in the cave in that period."
