In 2025 a team of archaeologists discovered the remains of a site in Lower Austria once used to butcher mammoths, dating back a remarkable 25,000 years. The find sheds light on the life of early humans shortly before the peak of the last Ice Age, and layers of mammoth bones and stone tools reveal how these vast animals were butchered not only for meat but for ivory, which may have been made into projectiles.

The remains of at least five individuals were discovered at the site, suggesting that it was a habitual spot for mammoth processing at a time when humans and mammoths roamed central Europe side by side.
