In February 2025, a joint British-Egyptian team discovered the rock-hewn tomb of Thutmose II, the pharaoh who ruled Egypt from 1493 to 1479 BC. Known as 'the missing pharaoh', the discovery has been hailed as the most significant discovery since Tutankhamun in 1922.

The tomb was found in the western wadis near the Valley of the Kings, buried under millennia of debris. It was empty, with indications that Thutmose II and his treasures were moved just six years after the burial when the tomb flooded. The team are hoping the discovery will lead them to find a second, intact tomb soon.
