An ignorant tourist climbed 91 steps to the top of El Castillo at the famed Chichen Itza archaeological site in Mexico. After waving from the top she made her way back down – only to be met with angry crowds booing, throwing water bottles and calling for her to be jailed as she was escorted out. The public have been banned from climbing the centuries-old site since 2008, so we're not sure what her excuse was.

In March 2025, a 38-year-old German tourist was met with hostility from locals and apprehended by security after climbing the pyramid's off-limits stairs. Crowds had gathered to witness the 'Descent of Kukulcan' phenomenon, where the spring equinox's light and shadows create a serpent-like illusion.
