Many of Wyoming’s stunning lakes are encompassed by national parks Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and are therefore protected from development. But, while it lacks lakefront living, the town of Pinedale is perhaps the best base for exploring the state’s watery wonders.

The old ranch town is backed by the Wind River Mountains in an area criss-crossed by rivers and dotted with more than 1,300 lakes, including those in Titcomb Basin (pictured), right on the doorstep. Back in town, there's an Old West vibe that gives the sense of stepping back in time.
