California has something for every traveller. From the glitz of LA to the cool vibes of San Francisco, and the endless surf towns in between. But if you’re more into scenic hikes, fresh air, and sipping good wine (or cider) surrounded by rolling hills, head north.
Here, Deputy Syndication Editor Lois Mackenzie reveals eight reasons to add Sonoma County to your California bucket list...
Upon arrival at this stunning coastal hideaway, it's obvious why it was ranked number one in Condé Nast Traveler's 2024 Readers Choice Awards. Located on a bluff on the rugged Sonoma Coast, each room at The Lodge offers sweeping ocean views and cosy fireplaces, as well as luxury mod cons. Head outside for the stellar spa and fitness facilities, pool and hot tub, and incredible cuisine at Drakes, the onsite restaurant.
Rooms start from £245 ($329) a night.
What better way to experience the Northern Californian redwoods than soaring through the air along their tops? Book through Sonoma Zipline Adventures to enjoy seven ziplines and cross sky bridges, all in the heart of the lush redwood forest. The treetop tour starts from £89.52 ($119) per person.
Sonoma County is known for its wine, but did you know it produces incredible cider too? Horse & Plow is a family-run winery in Sebastopol where you can enjoy delicious cider and wine flights.
Enjoy tastes of small-batch cider blends like the popular Gravenstein (as the name suggests, made from the local Gravenstein apple) or the sharp, hop-infused Hops & Honey. Enjoy your cider in the outdoor seating garden, and pair it with the winery's selection of cheese and charcuterie board.
If you enjoy a gander around shops and markets, don’t skip The Barlow. Based in Sebastopol, it's a 12.5-acre open-air marketplace that brings together Sonoma County’s top artisans, winemakers, brewers and more. You'll also find craft coffee, homemade goods and many spots with cosy outdoor seating.
Stop by some local shops too. And if you’re looking for some local wines to take home, try tasting bar and shop, Region.
After wandering the shops and markets, you can't beat Fern Bar to refuel. Tucked inside The Barlow in Sebastopol, Fern is a cocktail haven that pairs delicious dishes with a buzzing atmosphere. The setting is as beautiful as the food, with plants filling every empty spot – think a homey, relaxing vibe.
The menu leans into Sonoma County’s biodiversity, offering standout plates like the Umami Bomb – mushrooms, shiitake cream, broccoli, crispy rice and balsamic – and delicious sharing plates. A special shout-out to the chef’s selection of seasonally pickled vegetables.
On the Sonoma Coast, foraging isn’t just about finding food, it’s a whole experience. Guided by local experts, you’ll explore forests, prairies, and tide pools in search of wild edibles like chanterelles, seaweed and even spiced red berries.
Learn to spot what’s safe, what’s not, and how to taste the landscape. After your forage, take your bounty back to the Timber Cove Resort, where you’ll enjoy a tasting by the Coast Kitchen’s chef.
Florence Avenue is a quirky street gallery in Sebastopol. Think front yard meets colour, meets scrap metal. Created by local artists Patrick Amiot and Brigitte Laurent, each piece is crafted from cast-off appliances, car parts, and more. Just minutes from downtown, you’ll be able to see all the pieces that range from robots to cartoon characters.
What started as one artist’s front yard project has grown into a community-wide event of recycling and art. No need to book, just turn up and prepare to be wowed. Top tip: to enjoy it fully, wait until after dark to see the creations lit up in all their glory.
Located in Sebastopol, Dickinson Glass offers hands-on flameworking workshops. Using torches instead of furnaces, you’ll melt and shape molten glass into anything from ornaments to wine bottle stoppers. Tools and materials are provided, and you’ll leave with your own handcrafted piece.
This is a fun one for all levels of skill. Weekend two-hour glass workshops start from around £70 ($95).
Sonoma County is over an hour's drive from San Francisco International Airport, but much less from Charles M. Schulz Airport. Flights from London Heathrow to San Francisco start from £350 return.
